Culture 4: The artistic voice

Beauty is truth, truth beauty …

John Keats (1958, p. 208)

Awareness of the transforming power of the photo is often embodied in popular stories like this one about the admiring friend who said, “My, that’s a fine child you have there!” Mother: “Oh, that’s nothing. You should see his photograph.”

Marshall McLuhan (1965, p. 188)

Unlike Cultures 1, 2 and 3, which are verbal, Culture 4 is visual. It is the culture of beauty and performance

that expresses itself in ritual performance like coronation rites, graduation ceremonies, and Veterans’ Day parades. It is the culture of dance, painting, sculpture, music, and architecture.

(O’Malley, 2004, p. 19)
